IB English Guide | Ten Books recommended in IB English

A group of books related to IB English.

1. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - This novel explores themes of racism, prejudice, and justice in the Deep South. It also touches on coming-of-age, and the loss of innocence.


2. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad - This novella is an allegory for the exploitation and imperialism of African colonies by European powers. It's also a critique of the futility of the search for meaning and the human condition.


3. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - This magical realist novel is a meditation on the cyclical nature of time, and the decline of a family and a community over several generations.


4. Macbeth by William Shakespeare - This tragedy is a classic examination of ambition and guilt, and the consequences of unchecked desires.


5. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - This satirical novel focuses on the lives of the Bennet family, and the themes of love, marriage, and class in Georgian England.


6. Animal Farm by George Orwell - This allegorical novella uses animal characters to comment on the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and the rise of Soviet totalitarianism.


7. Lord of the Flies by William Golding - This novel uses the setting of a group of young boys stranded on an island to explore the dark side of human nature and the breakdown of social order.


8. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger - This coming-of-age novel focuses on the disillusionment of the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, and his struggle to find meaning in a world that he perceives as phony.


9. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens - This classic novel is a coming-of-age story that explores themes of social mobility, education, and class in Victorian England.


10. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley - This dystopian novel is a critique of industrial and technological progress and the ways in which it can dehumanize and control individuals.
