The International Baccalaureate (IB) Analysis & Approaches (AA) Mathematics course is designed for students who have a strong interest in mathematics and who wish to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. The course focuses on the exploration and analysis of mathematical ideas, and the development of students' ability to solve problems and think critically.
Course Structure:
The AA course is structured over four main areas of study: algebra, functions and equations, geometry and trigonometry, and calculus.
These areas of study are then further divided into specific topics, such as polynomials, exponential functions, trigonometry, limits and derivatives.
The course includes both theoretical and applied problem-solving, as well as the development of mathematical reasoning and critical thinking skills.
Students will also be encouraged to engage in mathematical investigation, explore connections between different mathematical topics, and use technology as a tool for solving problems.
Assessment:
Assessment for the AA course consists of internal and external assessments.
Internal assessments are completed throughout the course and are worth 20% of the final grade. These assessments are typically tasks that are completed in class, such as worksheets, investigations, and problem-solving activities.
External assessments are worth 80% of the final grade and consist of two written exams, each lasting 2 hours. These exams test students on their understanding of the course content and their ability to apply their knowledge to new problems.
The exams will include both multiple-choice and short answer questions, as well as extended response questions that require the use of mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
The AA course is designed to challenge and inspire students who have a passion for mathematics, and it provides a rigorous and comprehensive mathematical education. With a focus on both theoretical and practical problem-solving, as well as the development of critical thinking and mathematical reasoning skills, the AA course prepares students for further study in mathematics and related fields.
